Genre Conventions – Film Opening
Genre Conventions – Film Opening
To show parts of the horror, slasher, and thriller genres, each of the genre conventions had to be included. Many horror films consist of special effects makeup after someone is hurt or killed. In this opener, a hand hanging out of the bathtub with makeup on it is included to indicate that someone had in fact been hurt. Suspense comes from the appearance of the hand and the idea of someone lying in the tub. Another example of a convention used was having one of the characters, Sienna (me), find the hand lying out of the bathtub and scream. Often, in horror films, a big scream is a very memorable moment that opens the plot to the viewer. Slasher conventions were also used. It was implied that the protagonist, Julie, kills her friend Ella out of jealousy. Subtle tension was created between Julie and Ella at the beginning of the opener, foreshadowing something happening between them. Then eventually, one of them is killed. Finally, to show conventions of a thriller, high levels of tension were featured when getting closer to the action point and a cliffhanger at the end since it is just the opening.
